New FOP president wants to tackle Metro Corrections staffing concerns
WLKY reports: Daniel Johnson, the newly sworn-in president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 77, said his top priority is fixing staffing shortages at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections so the burden on officers is eased... An assessment presented to Louisville Metro Government in November found that in June 2024, more than 100 of LMDC's 390 positions were vacant. LMDC says the current number of vacancies is 72, with 44 of those being roles that supervise or monitor inmates.

$20M lawsuit settlement, if approved. Who pays? You.
JANUARY 27 2026 - Louisville has agreed to pay $20 million to settle claims that it unlawfully detained incarcerated people beyond their release dates, according to a federal court filing.
Although a formal settlement agreement has not yet been finalized, the settlement amount, if approved by U.S. District Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings, would be one of the largest in Metro history. It would also bring nearly eight years of litigation to an end. In February 2017, six people filed a lawsuit in the Western District of Kentucky, alleging they were held in Louisville’s jail longer than a judge had ordered or were not released on work release as scheduled... they missed medical appointments, school, training classes, and work, according to the lawsuit. Senate Bill 86, filed Jan. 13 by Phillip Wheeler of Pikeville, would mandate participation in three models of ICE’s 287(g) program:
- Task Force model: Allows officers to identify, process and detain people suspected of being in the country illegally during routine policing
- Jail Enforcement model: Allows corrections officers to be deputized by the federal government to question people in custody about their immigration status
- Warrant Service Officer model: Trains local officers to serve and execute administrative warrants on people held at the agency’s jail
“SB 86 is about clarity, consistency, and public safety,” Wheeler, a Republican, said in a news release. “When individuals are already in custody for criminal activity, law enforcement agencies should have the tools and partnerships needed to ensure the law is enforced appropriately and responsibly.” Read more
